The program framework of the Public Administration department, which started education in 2004 with the awareness of the importance of a contemporary and qualified education in the field, basically includes the fields of law, politics, economy, sociology, urbanization and environmental problems. The program is structured to provide the equipment required for professional fields such as manager, local authority, administrative law judge, expert or inspector in public or private sector organizations.

One of the areas that our department attaches importance to is that our students do internships in the fields they intend to work in their professional lives. Our students, who successfully complete their internships in public institutions, local governments, international organizations, companies and non-governmental organizations, can gain career experience before graduation.

The ultimate goal of the undergraduate program offered at Yeditepe University Department of Public Administration is to develop students who know Turkey's social structure as well as its administrative structure, who are aware of and can follow the changes in the world, who have the ability to think broadly and analytically and express their thoughts in Turkish and English. Our aim is to train managerial candidates who have internalized the concept of "public interest", have high competitiveness in private organizations, have a face towards the modern world and a heart towards their country, who are "free in thought, free in conscience, free in wisdom".

The program framework of the Public Administration department basically consists of courses in Administrative Sciences, Law, and Political Science. In addition, the fields of economy, sociology, urbanization and environmental problems are also included in our program. The program is structured to provide the equipment required for professional fields such as manager, civil administrator, administrative law judge, expert or inspector in public or private sector organizations.

The courses in our undergraduate program are not courses where the faculty member just lectures and students take notes, but are courses based on students doing research, discussing, analyzing and producing. The basic approach in our department is to reinforce the skills of obtaining, accessing and using information. In our program, where interdisciplinary studies are encouraged, we aim to enable specialization. In line with our understanding of interactive education, one of our ultimate goals is to provide our students with empathy on social issues. 

Our graduating students can continue their careers in the academic field or work in the public or private sector.

 

What is the Department of Public Administration?

 

Department of Public Administration is a 4-year undergraduate program located at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. In order to become a Public Administration student, it is necessary to graduate from the Equally-Weighted departments of high schools.  The language of instruction of the program is 100% English. Students who are not proficient in the language of instruction can continue their academic programs after successfully completing the one-year preparatory program. Students who certify their language proficiency with an exam score accepted by higher education institutions and students who are successful in the "Foreign Language Proficiency Exam" conducted by Yeditepe University are exempt from the preparatory class.

Public administration refers to creating policies in the relevant field and implementing these policies, as well as the organizational structure of state institutions that serve the public. The program aims to train individuals who can think analytically at various levels of public institutions, who have internalized the concept of "Public Interest" and who are equipped to evaluate administrative processes from a national and universal perspective. The training program is created by following new developments in the field of public administration. Thus, students are provided with a dynamic education in the light of new information. While the public administration curriculum includes the theoretical framework of the field of administration, it offers a rich and qualified education with courses examining the reflections of these theories in practice. The education program also includes elective courses based on students' interests and areas of expertise. Having student exchange agreements with many universities in European countries is among the opportunities offered by Yeditepe University to students. Graduates with a bachelor's degree in Public Administration can use their diplomas in many fields. They can work in various levels of public institutions, as well as in managerial positions in multinational companies and private institutions.

Public Administration Scholarship Opportunities

 

Yeditepe University supports its students with various scholarship programs such as success scholarship, management scholarship and athlete scholarship. There are also two types of scholarships, full and 50%, that can be won through the Student Selection and Placement Exam. Yeditepe University's scholarship program continues uninterruptedly during normal education. Studying Public Administration at Yeditepe University

 

In the Public Administration undergraduate program, there are not only courses where the faculty member shares their knowledge and experiences and students take notes, but also courses based on students' research, critical thinking, discussion and analysis. The basic education approach of the Department of Public Administration is to develop students' skills in using the information they have learned in practice. In the program where interdisciplinary studies are encouraged, the main aim is to allow students to specialize through elective courses. In line with the applied and interactive education approach of the Department of Public Administration, providing students with experience in managerial and social issues is among the ultimate goals. The "Academic Writing Center" within the university offers training to support students in writing assignments, theses, project reports and other studies. The department prepares students for professional business life by improving their written communication competencies as well as oral communication.

 

With the seminars held regularly every year by the Department of Public Administration, students are offered the opportunity to meet with representatives of the public, private sector and non-governmental organizations. Students meet with local administrators such as mayors and city council presidents, as well as civil authorities such as governors and district governors, and have the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of the invited speakers. Within the scope of training seminars, students can easily find internship and job opportunities and have the opportunity to follow the application of theoretical knowledge in practice. In addition, the internship program taken within the scope of the compulsory course offers students the opportunity to work in public institutions and organizations, local governments, private institutions and non-governmental organizations. There is a "Career and Personal Development Office" within the university in order to ensure that students have career management skills not only when they graduate but also throughout life. The office helps students become individuals who prove their competence in the business world by supporting them in their personal development and transition to professional business life. In order to provide students of the Department of Public Administration with new skills and increase employment rates, they are offered the opportunity to do double majors and minors in other undergraduate programs within the university.

 

What Does a Public Administration Graduate Do? Where Does It Work?

 

The undergraduate program of the Department of Public Administration basically consists of courses such as Administrative Sciences, Law and Political Science. Along with these courses, courses covering areas of expertise such as economics, sociology, urbanization and environmental problems are also included in the education program. Public Administration graduates can work in various levels of public institutions, as well as in managerial positions in multinational companies and private institutions.  The undergraduate program is structured to provide the equipment required for professional fields such as civil administrator, inspector in banks and treasury under secretariats, administrative law judge, judge, consultant, expert and assistant expert in ministries or private institutions. Students who continue their master's and doctoral studies after undergraduate graduation can pursue an academic career.

HISTORY

The Department of Public Administration, which has been within the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences since its establishment, started education in 2004 and had its first graduates in 2009. During 2004-2005, Prof.Dr. Hasan Köni, in the period 2005-2007 Prof.Dr. Ahmet Naki Yücekök and as acting head of department M.Deniz Tansi in the period 2007-2009 was the head of the department.Our department was chaired by Prof. Meral Öztoprak between 2009-2021. The Department of Public Administration has been currently chaired by Assoc. Prof.Dr. Deniz Tansi.

 

In the department, there are one professor, one associate professor, two assistant professors, two research assistants and one project assistant.

In the Department of Public Administration, where the language of instruction is English, students begin the first year of the undergraduate program by learning and improving the English language in the Preparatory Program. During their four-year undergraduate education, they graduate as individuals who are experts in their fields with the course options offered to them within the framework of four departments: Administrative Sciences / Political Science / Law / Urbanization and Environment. On the one hand, the Department of Public Administration supports the academic development of its students, and within this framework, it hosted the "XI. National Political Science and Public Administration Student Congress". On the other hand, it also organizes various events that bring local administrators (mayor, city council president), civil authorities (governor, district governor) together with students.

With the rapid change and development in the globalizing world causing changes in the management structures of countries, rapidly increasing reform efforts in recent years, and concepts such as governance and the rule of law, transparency, effective civil society, participation and control, and decentralization gaining importance, since the 2014-2015 Academic Year, our "Local Governments and Governance" Master's Program (with or without thesis) has started education within our department affiliated with the Institute of Social Sciences. The language of instruction of the program is English.

Our faculty, which has bilateral agreements with more than 100 higher education institutions abroad, attaches great importance to student mobility. Double Major and Minor Opportunities

 

Students studying in the Department of Public Administration can also obtain a second diploma by completing a double major in the departments of Law, Political Science and International Relations, Economics, and Art and Cultural Management. For minor programs, students who have achieved the required success in their main undergraduate programs can register by applying to the relevant Faculty Dean's Office and receive an additional certificate to their diploma in a different field in which they want to specialize.
