What does economy mean?

Economics is a social science that examines the production, consumption and trade activities of goods and services that will meet the needs of people in order to sustain their lives and investigates how unlimited human needs should be met in the most effective way with scarce resources. Therefore, it examines all activities of people from production to consumption from a behavioral social perspective. Usually, the relationship with money comes to mind first, but money is only a means of payment.  At the core of almost every activity of people and societies is the need to use a resource in an optimum (EFFECTIVE) way.

Why is it important to study economics?

Economics is a natural part of every aspect of our lives. Studying economics helps us better understand the world we live in, the government policies and businesses of a wide range of countries, the use of land, labor and physical capital resources, and the importance of productivity. You can learn, understand and explain everything from how prices change in the markets for goods, services, employment and money to why income levels and living standards differ between countries. Economics has an impact on every aspect of life and on every group of people. For this reason, economists can conduct research on a wide range of social issues, from public economic policies to poverty and income distribution, environmental economics, etc. On the other hand, societies' social reforms need to be supported by economic reforms. Studying economics helps us to become more competent citizens who are better able to decide how and when to carry out these reforms.

Which sectors/companies can I find a job after graduating from the Department of Economics?

Students who graduate from the undergraduate program of the Department of Economics find a wide range of job opportunities in the private or public sectors. Rather than providing education for a specific profession, economics education provides the basic knowledge and skills that will enable its graduates to pursue different professions.

In addition to firms in the manufacturing sector, graduates can work in the service sectors of banking and all financial market institutions and organizations (e.g. stock exchange and securities companies), insurance companies and foreign trade (import/export) companies as specialists, assistant specialists, inspectors, financial advisors, accountants, accountants, sales and marketing professionals and later in their careers as management trainees and managers. They can find job opportunities in treasury departments or branches in the headquarters of private and public sector banks. In addition, multinational companies often utilize the expertise of economists when implementing their economic activities.

Another opportunity is to work in international institutions and organizations (World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), United Nations (UN), Organization for Economic, Development and Cooperation (OECD). In addition to the professional business life in the private sector, academicianship is another option that our graduates can choose after completing their master's and doctoral studies. Our students can start working immediately after graduation, no certificate or exam is required. In addition, they can be employed in public institutions and organizations such as the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, the Ministries of Treasury and Finance, Economy (Trade) and Development, the Undersecretariat of Treasury, the Competition Authority, the Capital Markets Board and the Banking Supervision and Regulation Agency.

What are the most important qualifications for studying economics?

The most important qualifications for studying economics are an interest in social phenomena and the behavior of individuals and a love of analytical thinking. If students have a "why" question in their minds about the decisions made by individuals, companies and governments and their consequences, and if they want to feel the power of responding to this question with an analytical framework, then they will both enjoy studying Economics and be successful in their studies. Economics students are prepared for real life by devoting their learning time to both teamwork and independent study. They learn to take responsibility for their own development, which will be a great asset in their professional life.

Do I have to take only the department courses, can I choose courses from different departments? What are the department elective courses?

We have designed our program to be flexible and open to innovations. By keeping our compulsory courses to a minimum, we have created 6 Free Elective and 7 departmental elective courses in the curriculum of our Department. In our university-wide Free Elective courses, our students can choose courses from all disciplines under the umbrella of management sciences (business administration, public administration, political science and international relations), as well as from other faculties of our university such as Fine Arts, Communication, Science and Literature, Commercial Sciences. In our Economics Department Elective courses, we try to keep our program up-to-date with courses on different topics of economics. For example, in the elective Cinema and Economics course, students associate the abstract economic theories and models they have seen in their compulsory courses with concrete real economic events such as the global crisis. After the economic issues are presented through the eyes of the directors and actors in the films, they are discussed and social solutions are produced by using academic books and articles on the subject and economic knowledge.
