This course will serve as an introduction to Turkish politics and the democratization process. We will mainly focus on major themes after the 1946 to 1980 Military Coups. We will examine the key components of “politics” in the Turkish political system, including statist and elitist political traditions, Gramscian hegemony theory, passing to democracy, political parties, elections, constitutions, electoral participation, civil-military relations, military coups and intervenes. A solid grasp of these subjects will help you better understand the underlying reasons for the structure of the Turkish political system and Turkish democracy.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to trace the history and development of democracy in Turkey;
• analyze the roots of the Turkish political system and criticize the failure of democracy
• describe Turkish political culture and values and discuss their connection to social and demographic characteristics;
• explain the role of political parties, elections, and constitutions in the Turkish political system and
• compare the major ideological differences between the parties;
The Turkish political life will be examined around the politics in the Ottoman Era, the War of Independence, and established the Republic and the Single Party Era. Then the important milestones of the Turkish democratization passing to a multiparty system and the military coups will be studied.
