Course Objectives: 
The aim of the course is to examine the political life of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey from the 19th century to the present, in general terms and through specific themes. To reveal the basic features of political life in Turkey by taking into account the main political events, institutions and actors in a period of nearly 200 years.
Course Content: 
The Turkish political life, which will be examined from a historical perspective, will take into account the historical events that are considered to be important breaking moments, while taking care to evaluate these breaking moments within historical continuity. In this context, after revealing the basic features of the political change in the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century, the developments in the transition to the Republican regime will be emphasized. Afterwards, political parties, political actors, institutions and currents of thought will be examined, taking into account the coming to power of the Democratic Party in 1950, the military coups of 1960 and 1980, and the political structures formed after it. In the final stage, the political transformation in Turkey in the 21st century will be discussed.
