Course Objectives: 

The major objective of the course is to increase the student’s knowledge and understanding of the Turkish economy. At the end of the course, it is hoped that the student will have the ability to reason accurately and objectively about the economic matters in Turkey, and the world. Another objective is to give a development economics perspective to the students.

Course Content: 

This course is designed to discuss the growth and development dynamics of the Turkish economy. The basic turning points of the Turkish economic history will be examined in the first half of the course. The remaining half will analyze the sectors and some current topics and policy issues of the Turkish economy. Macroeconomic data, economic reforms and the effects of recent global crises on Turkey will be the focus of this course. The economics conditions of the developing countries from Latin America and East Asia will be analyzed, and compared to Turkey’s economic development and situation throughout the course. Current issues such as, macroeconomic stability and economic reforms, privatization and regulation will be covered. Capital flows, financial globalization, and foreign direct investment of the Turkish economy will be examined. The trade policy, income distribution, poverty, unemployment and the informal sector in Turkey will be analyzed.
